45 posts, none approved. Indifference from the staff is what makes the difference between the approved commenter system being a good thing and it completely crushing discussion. Authors post their article and start working on their next piece, leaving discussions to collapse upon themselves. I guess that makes sense, when in Max Read's world, almost every one of us is a "shitty commenter."

Aren't comments automatically approved if another pre-approved user comments or recommends them? Isn't it not necessarily the staff's fault for not going through and starring every non-spam comment?

Yes, but Gawker eliminated all approved commenters, so only staff can approve comments until they follow someone, who can then ungrey comments, but only by replying to them. A recommend won't do it.

Yeah I am a little confused because FA followed me yesterday and now they are no longer following me, did they purge again?

Aren't we as Oppo contributors, able to approve comments on Jalopnik?

I'm still followed so I can comment out of the gray and reply to pull a post out of the gray. I miss being able to just star them and pull them out that way.

There are no approved commenters who can approve other commenters.

Nope. We can approve comments on oppo by replying to them, recommending them, or by following them for Oppositelock.
If you're approved on the FP you can approve comments by replying to them, but NOT by recommending them. We're not authors over there, so our powers are limited.

On Jalopnik, that's true. On Gawker proper, nobody is followed any more. The only way for a comment to get out of the grey is for an author to respond to it, with a probable few exceptions for those that were followed today. Given the track record, I expect 95% of all comments to remain grey over there. After all, commenters are shitty. The disdain for the very people that drive traffic to your site and pay your salary (on that side of the house) is appalling. If Gawker really thinks commenters are shitty, they should disable comments and let their own content bring in clicks.

Gotcha.

Hmmm, I wonder if they did a whole reset over there. I used to be followed by Valleywag and now I am not. Oh well, Gawker is the side that pisses me off anyways.

Perhaps if they used a real commenting system instead of reinventing the wheel and ending up with... ugh... Kinja... things might be better.

And authors aren't approving comments unless sunshine is applied directly to their posterior through extensive ventilation via echoing exactly what they want to hear. The concept of good commenters and deep, insightful discussion on a gossip blog that has decided that race baiting is a more profitable business opportunity is almost humorous.
